Enclave by Thomas Locke

"Enclave" by Thomas Locke is a futuristic book about 100 years from a great crash and now America is a bunch of enclaves.  In one of the largest named Catawba a vein of Gold is discovered under neath it and now their fate is up to a trader named Caleb.  Right off the bat I had a hard time getting into this book it really started out as if you would have to have read a book before this one to understand what is going on.  I really got lost right off the bat as for the story was all over the place.  Plus at times with the speech patterns I would forget that I am in the future not in the old west. It went back and forth with the characters I just could not get into this book.  I am realizing this author is just not for me but you can try him for yourself.

Hidden Peril by Irene Hannon

"Hidden Peril" by Irene Hannon is the second in the Men of Valor in this one we find Kristin Dane as a teenager wanting to change the world well as an adult does in a small way with her fair trade store but internationals problems hit her doorstep.  Her problems start when people connected to her shop start dying and we meet Detective Luke Carter who needs to solve this international mystery before more die or Kristin dies.  This was an ok paced book, normally her books have great pace to them making me want to sit and read in one sitting. Not this one I really had a hard time getting into the story.  It might be I am getting tired of the typical international terrorist story that is now the norm.   I mean seriously can't we just have a murder mystery that is just about a local mystery not so much an international one.  This book also put the romance of Kristin and Luke as a main point of the story.  I am just not a romance book or movie person just give me a good mystery without romance.  I am on the fence on recommending this book she normally writes great books but this one seemed rushed.

The Light Before Day by Suzanne Woods Fisher

"The Light Before Day" by Suzanne Woods Fisher is the third in the Natucket Legacy series.  Henry Macy returns to Nantucket after three years on a whaling ship.  Henry and his sister Hitty's grandmother has passed away leaving them a vast fortune however there are some rules they must do to get that fortune.  While the siblings are not too thrilled with the rules they don't want it to go to their dad's form thieving business partner.  This book is a good stand alone book that you do not have to read the previous ones to understand it. Their relationship with their grandmother was not always a good as she was big into only the best people in her family.  The story is interesting even though at times it can be slow.  I am really enjoying how we are starting to see more quaker stories instead of only Amish.  As at this time in history 1700's and 1800's the Quakers were more common than the Amish.  I highly recommend this book as a good story about how sometimes people push us for the wrong reasons but good can come out of it.

A Song Unheard by Roseanna M. White

"A Song Unheard" by Roseanna M. White is the second book in the Shadows Over England series which takes place just before World War I.  Our main characters are Willa a prodigy violinist and thief that must steal from Lukas De Wilde.  This book was interesting in the aspect of the historical time frame as the author is very good at combining history with a story.  Now to the story itself usually I really enjoy this author's writing but not this one.  The story really dragged on to the point I almost did not finish the book. The characters themselves were not that interesting even though the background to the story was.  It just wasn't for me.  Not the author's best but I will still keeping reading her works. Maybe it was just me so try it for yourself.

The Brave Art of Motherhood by Rachel Marie Martin

"The Brave Art of Motherhood" by Rachel Marie Martin is a book with the authors stories of motherhood that are to encourage us to fight fear and be confident in who we are.  This was not your stereotypical Christian motherhood book about their perfect life this author admits things have gone wrong and her kids are not perfect.  My favorite encouragement the author gave me was talking about how I can be happy no matter if my house is spotless or messy nightmare.  I also really enjoyed when she talks about the sins of being to busy and the sin of pride how they can be the same or even different at the same time.   Another topic that helped me even though she doesn't completely point it out that I need to finish items not just hop from one idea to the next. I highly recommend this book and I especially want to point out something the author points out also that sometimes as a mom we do need to freak out as it can help get things done.

A Secret To Die For by Lisa Harris

"A Secret To Die For" by Lisa Harris is about a women named Grace whose client Stephen is murdered and the bad guys think she can help them get what they wanted from him.  The mystery portion of this book was very good until about half way through then the stereotypical romance with mystery.  The author is very talented in writing a very good descriptive and page turning novel but this novel was way to formulaic.  I would love to read something the author wrote that strayed from the standard Christian mystery romance story.  I still recommend this book as the mystery made it worth it.

Live Long and... by William Shatner

"Live Long and.. What I Learned Along the Way" by William Shatner is a memoir on living life the best way you can.  Now I will say yes I knew of William Shatner from Star Trek and many other shows/movies but thought he was an arrogant jerk.  But this book has changed my mind about him and would like to meet him one day.  He really is open in this book especially about feeling like a loner even in a group of people I am so like that.  He really is down to earth more than the character types he usually plays.  This book was interesting and very encouraging.  I like how he talks about no matter what your age embrace the adventure in life and stay active.  If if you are only a slight fan of his but need encouraging to live life and enjoy it read this book.

Unified by Tim Scott & Trey Gowdey

"Unified" by Senators Tim Scott & Trey Gowdy is about how two senators from different backgrounds and races have come together to not create division but to friends in diversity.  This was such a powerful book on their friendship also on how yes we may not experience the things the same way as others but we can still be friends.  My favorite quote from the book really points that out which "No matter what differences we may have with another person - social, racial, political, spiritual, ideological - if we will look for something we have in common, or something we can admire or emulate in the other person, we can always build on that."  These two senators attitudes and love of the lord Jesus is just so powerful on how they show Christian love no matter what has or is happening to them.   They don't dismiss the racism that still happens to African-American's today but the don't focus on it and try to show love to others.  They also talk about how people are still treated differently due to skin.  One area that can be considered controversial that they talk about is how people selling small amounts of cocaine are usually slapped on the wrist while someone selling small amount of crack the book is thrown at them.  This is just a very good book on race and working together as Christians, I highly recommend it.

Everything She Didn't Say by Jane Kirkpatrick

"Everything She Didn't Say" by Jane Kirkpatrick is the story of Carrie Strahorn who wrote down her life and her internal struggles dealing with a loss she was not wanting to have.   This was a typical Jane Kirkpatrick book where she takes the life of a real person and makes a novel out of it.  As normal she did an excellent job. We not only read of Carrie's day to day life but also her inner struggles she deals with while being a supportive wife to a railroad promoter and writer.  Now if you were expecting and exciting adventure at every turn then this book is not for you.  Now if you are me who likes sometimes to just read about the day to day life adventure of someone then this is your book.  I have so much more I want to say especially about the inner struggle Carrie deals with but since that gives away a good part of the book I will not do that.  So I highly recommend this book to read as the weather cools down.

Through A Mother's Tears by Cathy Broomfield

"Through A Mother's Tears" by Cathy Broomfield is a book about a mother's pain of one daughters murder and the death of another daughter from drinking herself to death.  This was a heart breaking story of the mother's hurt and anger.  The author had an idea that her daughter Kristy's husband was very bad news but as a sad normal the abused could not believe it.  While the author tries to portray her daughters as perfect people that sadly was not true, they made decisions that put them both in a lifestyles that are higher risk of death.  Still that is no reason for Kristy's murder or to see a daughter drink herself to death to hide her pain from loosing a sister in a violent way.   I really hope this book is an eye-opener to woman and even men that are in abusive situations that you need leave it affects your family also not just you.  Also that people realize you can drink yourself to death.  I highly recommend this book.

Willing To Believe by R.C. Sproul

"Willing To Believe" by R.C. Sproul is a book about understanding the role of our will in salvation.   As usual of R.C. Sproul's book this was not a quick read as it was in depth study.  However it is more of a study of the different beliefs over a true bible study type book.  It still was good read on all the different arguments out there on free will.   I would have enjoyed more scripture to debate each side of the arguments of human will.  So with that understanding I do recommend this book as it is a good look at human will with our salvation.

Crack Yourself Up Jokes for Kids by Sandy Silverthorne

"Crack Yourself Up Jokes for Kids" by Sandy Silverthorne is a kids book filled with fun and at time cheesy jokes.  This is just a fun book with all kinds of jokes great for little kids all the way up to adults.  These are very clean jokes and riddles which is a relief that you don't have to worry about filthy jokes for kids. I laughed at lot of these myself even old ones I had not heard in years.  I highly recommend this book especially since my 14 year old kept stealing from me to read it.

A Rumored Fortune by Joanna Davidson Politano

"A Rumored Fortune" by Joanna Davidson Politano is the story of Tressa Harlowes whose father died while taking the secret of where his wealth is hidden with him.  This takes place in Victorian England so a fortune would be important to anyone but especially women at this time.  This was a very interesting and detailed book that made you think you were in Victorian England.  A very well written book.  Now I will say this book was not quite what I was expecting as it was more of a historical romance than a mystery novel.  If I had known that I might not have chosen to review it but even with that I am glad I did as this author is very talented.  So I highly recommend this book.

The Edge of Over There by Shawn Smucker

"The Edge of Over There" by Shawn Smucker is the second book in the "The Day the Angels Fell" series.  I really don't know how to summarize this book even re-reading the description on the back I am still not sure how to summarize it.  Maybe its because I have not read the first book in the series.  I will say right off the bat even though it is marketed as Christian novel I really can't consider it a Christian novel.  For me a Christian novel should draw us either closer to encourage our relationship to Christ and this one was spiritual but I am not sure if it was a Christian Spirituality.  I got confused by different characters and if the Tree of Life was to represent God or what but that all might be because I have not read the first one.  I just kept getting confused and confused so I am going to revisit this book after I read the first one.  So for me I would not recommend this book if you have not read the first one and then go into thinking of it as a good fiction book not a Christian novel.

The Gospel for Muslims by Thabiti Anyabwile

"The Gospel for Muslims" by Thabiti Anyabwile is about encouraging us to share Christ with confidence especially to Muslims.  This was a very interesting and intriguing book but I do think a lot of the tips could be used not only to witness to Muslims but other non-believers as well.  If you are looking for an in depth apologetics book then this one is not for you.  It was just a basic average Joe type of sharing the Gospel book.  This was a very encouraging book that reminds me it is my duty as a Christian to witness to all people no matter who they are.  I highly recommend this book for any Christian.

River to Redemption by Ann H. Gabhart

"River to Redemption" by Ann H. Gabhart is about Adria Starr who as a child lost her whole family to a cholera epidemic of 1833 but thanks to a slave named Louis she survived.  She is adopted by a widow who lost her husband to the epidemic also.  Now grown she has to decided her future to be a wife or to help slaves especially her friend who saved her as a child Louis.  Before I get into my opinions on the book I feel I should explain cholera as it is a disease we read a lot about in the past but don't hear much about it in today's world so many people don't know what it is.  It was a disease that cause severe and deadly vomiting and diarrhea due to contaminated water and in the 1800's it was a common way to die and people still die from it in this day but not as many.  Back to the review.  This was a very powerful novel not only on Adria's feeling for the her friend Louis and the school teacher Ruth who took her in as a child but also her decision on does she want to marry or to do something else. I really liked how the author goes into the attitudes and feelings of the time wether they are right or wrong.  She did not sugar coat how some people felt that they thought slavery was no big deal and how others knew it was wrong.  This a powerful book in my opinion on how are were going to respond when things are not correct and to help others even when it could cost us.  I highly recommend this book.

Raising World Changers in a Changing World by Kristen Welch

"Raising World Changers in a Changing World" by Kristen Welch is about learning the joy of giving not just a little but all of what God has given you.  This was a very good book on reminding us about the beauty of giving.  So many books on giving just talk about how if you give you get more this book is not that type.  The author writes about giving in the biblical way which is about sharing what God has blessed you with other no matter how much or how little and not worry about what you may get.  She really does a good job of showing giving is not about you but about others.  I highly recommend this book as a great book on giving.

The Black and The Blue by Matthew Horace

"The Black and The Blue" by Matthew Horace is a book from the viewpoint of a police officer on racism and the police.  What a powerful book that is not on the sensational side or even one sided.  What do I mean by one sided well when it comes to race and the police it seems in our modern society that it is that people believe only side.  Well this author is not only an African-American but also a police officer so he truly knows both sides.  He does not hold back on his views or what he personally has experienced from racist co-workers or what he has seen as a public person.  The blatant racism he experienced was sad and should not be happening but sadly it is.  The author really shows us how in our modern times we think racism is gone but it really is still there just hidden right under the surface.  This was a very powerful book and I highly recommend it.

"High Treason" by DiAnn Mills

"High Treason" by Diann Mills is about FBI Special Agent Kord Davidson and CIA operative Monica Alden protecting a Saudi Prince while in the United States.  As with most Christian novels it is a mystery romance.  The base mystery portion which deals with who is trying to kill the Saudi prince is a very good one.   However I am one that is getting really tired of the side romance story.  Why can't we have a good mystery like the base of this one without romance.  Even  with that I really enjoyed the twists and turns on who might be doing the crimes.  The author is very good at making a good mystery and for that reason I highly recommend this book.

Why I Hate Green Beans by Lincee Ray

"Why I Hate Green Beans" by Lincee Ray is a memoir of the authors life of ups and downs.  This was interesting the biggest thing I got from this memoir is that the author loves the show "The Bachelor".  It was interesting to read the viewpoint of someone who also has issues with body image.  However intriguing this memoir I could not always connect with the author at some points I just wanted to hurry up and get thru the book.  But even with I do recommend it as a very good and interesting story on the authors life.

100 Questions Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask by Ilyce R. Glink

"100 Question Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask" by Ilyce R. Glink is what exactly it says a book for home buyers.  This was a great book for anyone including someone who has bought a house before as there might be things they might not have thought of.   It was also not just a book just about getting the best mortgage but also the best house.  Also it was nice to see actual people's stories of buying a home in this.   Very good information that I look forward to using one day if I am ever ready to buy a home.

The Proving by Beverly Lewis

"The Proving" by Beverly Lewis is about Amanda Dienner (Mandy) coming back to her hometown after her mother died to run her mother's bed and breakfast inn.  This is a story about Mandy who left the Amish life and having to face why she left plus forgiveness.  Also there is a side story of one of the people who visit the bed and breakfast which was an interesting one itself.   Amish books are usually so cliche but this was its own story without all the standard types.  It was a just an overall good story about forgiveness and what we think we seen may not be the whole story.  Also it is a story about how being open to change and God's work in our lives.  I highly recommend this book as it is one of Beverly Lewis's best books.

Where We Belong by Lynn Austin

"Where We Belong" by  Lynn Austin is about the life well off sisters Rebecca and Flora Hawes.   While Rebecca and Flora and in the high society of late 1800's but they are not the typical women of that era.  They go on an expedition to the middle east that brings back memories of their lives as young women and might be putting themselves in danger without knowing it. The book takes place at times in the sisters history while at the same time also from the viewpoints of different people.  It was confusing at times and seemed very drawn out.  I finally finished and sadly it was last couple chapters that I finally was intrigued by this book.  I usually enjoy Lynn Austin's books but this one was not one of her best.  So I recommend this book with reservations that this is not one of her best books.

The House on Foster Hill by Jamie Jo Wright

"The House on Foster Hill" by Jaime Jo Wright is Kaine Prescott who after 2 years with nobody believing her that her husband was murdered decides to start new purchasing a home she has never seen in her grandfather's home town.  Not only does this book take place in the present it also takes place 100 years ago when Kaine's family member Ivy tries to solve a murder of a young women found on that exact property that Kaine buys.  This book does start off on the slow side but stick with it as really gets going deep.  As it really talks about how sins of the past can affect the present. It also deals with things we think are only new such as sex trafficking but were happening in the past also.  This book deals with abuse, murder and other not so nice topics so if that bothers you then this is not the book for you.  But I really enjoyed this book and how it shows how the past can affect the present.  I highly recommend this book.

Beneath The Surface by Lynn H. Blackburn

"Beneath The Surface" by Lynn H. Blackburn is the first the Dive Team Investigations book series.  Our story starts with the dive team finding a body that nobody was supposed to find and detective Ryan Parker starting an investigations.  At the same time an old friend of Ryan's has moved back to town a Leigh Weston and someone is trying to kill her. So the question is either case related or not.  I always enjoy a good murder mystery even when I know there will be a little romance well this one did not disappoint.    We have a two fold mystery that you were not sure where it was going until near the end.  Thankfully it was one of those books that the ended was not figured out at the start of the book.  The book twists and turns in ways I was not expecting.  I highly recommend this series and can't wait for the next one.

How To Be A Perfect Christian by The Babylon Bee

"How To Be A Perfect Christian" by The Babylon Bee is a sarcastic look on how to be the most  perfect Christian out there.  Yes this book is tongue in cheek but at the same time it does teach you truth while being sarcastic.  It goes after common sacred cows of American Christianity and even popular teachers that are not correct. However it does it in a fun and shake you head type of way.  I love the way The Babylon Bee uses sarcasm and humor to teach truth as some people just can't see the truth without showing how ridiculous the false they are believing is.  This is not just a fun book but a very good learning book at the same time.  I highly recommend it especially if you already love reading The Babylon Bee.

Phoebe's Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher

"Phoebe's Light" by Suzanne Woods Fisher is the first book in the Nantucket Legacy book series that takes place in pre-revolutionary war America.  The author really did her history on the timeline of the people, the Quakers and whale.  rs.  I will admit that this is the third book I have read lately about the Quakers and pre-revolutionary time frame so I am beginning to think that this the start of a new trend instead of Amish.  The main character Phoebe living her life while learning about her Great-Grandma.  Sadly I really had a hard time getting into this as it really felt formulaic and I really did not like it.  At times I enjoyed the book but most of the time I got tired of the typical characters and story.  So I don't recommend it as I am not into the same old same old books.

I Will Not Fear by Melba Pattillo Beals

"I Will Not Fear" by Melba Pattillo Beals is her story of faith during the trials of her life starting even at birth all up to to now days.  Her story of faith is so powerful and interesting that once I started reading it I just couldn't put it down.  She is famous for being one of the Little Rock nine African Americans that integrated the High School in Little Rock.  She has gone through things that could break most people but she stood strong in her faith in God.  One thing I thought was a good point that she brought up is that she still faces discrimination in housing for being African American.  Also she really brings up the danger of child offenders and how the stalk their victims or almost victims.  This was a very powerful book that I highly recommend anyone to read.

Mrs. Oswald Chambers by Michelle Ule

"Mrs. Oswald Chambers" Michelle Ule is about the woman who stood by her more famous husband Oswald Chambers.  This was an interesting book about not just the wife of Oswald Chambers but their life together.  There life was not easy but praise God they survived and were witness of God's provisions.  Now I will say if you don't know who Oswald Chambers is then you may not understand why this book is interesting.  Before you say all Christians know who he is no they don't so research them to see if you want to read this book.  I do recommend it as a good historical information on a couple in the faith.

Cold Water by Samuel Parker

"Cold Water" by Samuel Parker is a Christian thriller that takes place in a small town where revenge/vigilantism is at the highest level.  Michael has moved back to town after being the state prison system trying to get away from the darkness that has haunted since childhood but it will not go away.  Neither will men in the community that think he must die especially one man who makes it his mission to kill Michael.  This was a very intriguing and interesting book that once I started reading I could put it down seriously I really couldn't.  It starts out in away I was not expecting and did leave a question at first what did Michael do so that others want this kind of revenge on him.  It does flash back to his crime and sentencing and life in prison.  Also it deals with the death that follows him which is kinda what you expect once start reading it but it is still a great novel.  I highly recommend this novel and I can't wait to read more of this author's books.

Breaking Cover by Michele Rigby Assad

"Breaking Cover" by Michele Rigby Assad is the author's story of becoming a CIA agent and her life in and after being in the CIA.  This was a very interesting book that once I picked it up I could not put it down.  The author really does an excellent job on telling her story without giving away secrets or details that could hurt others.  Her story is also about how our paths are not ours alone but how God wants them to go as she did things she never thought she would be able to do.  It was interesting how God used her skills she learned from the CIA in her civilian life after she left the department.  Also it was really good to read on how she seen the hand of God in her life.  I highly recommend this book if you like memoir as I do.

On Pills and Needles by Rick Van Warner

"On Pills and Needles" by Rick Van Warner is the story of a father trying to save his son from Opioid Addiction. This book is a powerful look from a father's standpoint dealing with his soon starting as a teen.  His story is the story of many parents in this country.  Many spending their own money hoping their child will be clean with rehab but a lot of times the rehab system is broken also.   Also we need to understand this story starts with a prescription drug called OxyContin which is also called a synthetic heroin.  The damage that this drug and actual heroin can cause in a community is devastating but not always as devastating as it is to the family of an addict.  This book helps us remember that the addicts are people also and that someone out there does love them.  Very powerful and I highly recommend it.

Out of the Ashes by Tracie Peterson

"Out of the Ashes" by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse is the second book in the Heart of Alaska book series. The series takes place in the early 1900's while Alaska is still a territory.  In this book we meat a Frenchman named  Jean-Michel Langelier who wants to escape the memories of war.  At the same time an woman from his past a young widow named Katherine is there trying to heal from an abusive husband.  We have some of the characters from the first book as we see more of their stories but mainly it is about Jean-Michel and Katherine so you could read this book without having read the first one.  This was a well paced story that was a romance but mainly it was about healing from our wounds and not letting them guide the future of the characters lives.  I highly recommend this book series.

The Last Girl by Nadia Murad

"The Last Girl" by Nadia Murad is the powerful story of a young woman who was life as she knew was stolen from ISIS. Nadia was a poor young woman just living her life in her Yazidi community Iraw when ISIS came thru and destroyed her life in ways no one should ever have to go thru.  I just don't know how she has the strength to write about the deaths she seen and the rapes she had to endure as being used as a sex slave by ISIS.  The emotional and physical torture she dealt with most could never even live thru let alone write about.  But her story and the story of many other victims of ISIS need to be heard. If you want to read this powerful book then you need to know this is not a warm fuzzy book it is telling the real truth.  The evil of people (she talks about not only the men members but also the woman members) blows my mind but I know it is out there.  I highly recommend this book so you can know what other people and some of the refugees have had to go thru.

A Plain Leaving by Leslie Gould

"A Plain Leaving" by Leslie Gould is the first book in the Sisters of Lancaster County book series.   It involves Jessica Bachman who left the Amish life and now has to come back to deal with her father's death.  Most of her family is not happy to see her but some are and she learns of interesting plus important things of her families past and present.  This was an interesting story as it wasn't the normal former Amish woman comes back and everyone welcomes her with open arms.  No, it was the opposite most were I would say hateful to her.  It was interest book that combined a story of the present with a family story from the 1700's.  It did not have the normal Amish fiction style romance it was mainly just about a good old fashioned story.  I highly recommend it and can't wait for the next one.

Thoughts on my hubby

27 years ago was the summer before my senior year in high school and I went for a walk that would change my life forever.  I just wanted to ...
